Breaking: 10 things you should be aware of this Sunday morning

 

1. On Saturday, rumours started to circulate that the president-elect, Bola Tinubu, might end his international trip early and come back to Nigeria on Monday to handle the National Assembly leadership dispute.


2. Yesterday, Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, urged President Muhammad Buhari to order security agencies to find the murderers responsible for the state's killings rather than just expressing his condolences. This comes after 87 people in the state were slain in several incidents over the course of 48 hours. 

3. Nobel Prize winner Prof. Wole Soyinka's call for an open debate was rejected by Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed. After attacks on him by "Obidients" who disapproved of his response to Datti's remarks on the February 25 presidential election, Soyinka had challenged Datti to an open discussion.


4. On Saturday morning, gunmen attacked Chitumu, a neighbourhood close to Zuba town, in the Gwagwalada area council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). According to Muhammad Liman, the village chief's secretary, the attackers arrived in the neighbourhood a few minutes after 12 am and proceeded to to the home of a cattle dealer named Isiaka Alhassan Dogara. 

5. A local boat capsized at Iwokiri, near the Okoroma community, Nembe waterways, in the Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, and several people were feared dead. Investigations indicate that the tragedy occurred while the boat was transporting people and supplies to Okpoama, also in the Brass Local Government Area.


6. In an effort to end the crisis roiling the Labour Party (LP), the 36 state chairmen, including the one for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have asked the Apapa-led faction to drop its lawsuit against some of the party members and follow the proper procedures for dispute resolution outside of court. 

7. According to the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), Ohanaeze Ndigbo's demands for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB's leader, are unconstitutional. Bola Tinubu's incoming administration was cautioned Wednesday by CNG's spokesperson, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, not to repeat what he called the "error of President Shehu Shagari."


8. Senator Magnus Abe, the Social Democratic Party's (SDP) candidate for governor in Rivers State, has said he intends to file a petition with the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to overturn the results of the state's election on March 18, 2023. Abe revealed this during a speech he gave yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state's capital. 

9. Usman Alkali Baba, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, has mandated the posting or redeployment of 14 AIGs to Departments, Commands, and Formations. This comes after recent retirements and promotions within the Nigeria Police.


10. Hassan Yusuf, 43, was detained by members of the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly setting Busayo Falola's flat on fire. According to reports, the suspect set fire to 127 Old Scholar Palace, Igan Road, Ago-Iwoye in the state's Ijebu-North Local Government Area in protest at his ex-failure lover's to make amends.
